Gearbox Software CEO Says PlayStation 5 And Xbox Series X Are The Biggest Leap In History Of Console Generations

Microsoft and Sony‘s respective next-generation consoles, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, are currently scheduled to launch next month, and according to Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford, it’ll be the biggest leap forward in the history of gaming.

While speaking with GameSpot, Gearbox’s CEO said that moving from the current-generation to the next-generation of consoles will be bigger than the leap from 2D to 3D.

“I always get so pumped when there’s an ability to take a step forward with new hardware and new technology, and anything that’s going to empower us,” said Pitchford while speaking with GameSpot. “I think customers will realize how profound of a difference it is to have the throughput capability that these new platforms bring. It’s just absolutely unreal. The leap there with PS5 and Xbox Series X is the biggest leap I have ever seen in the history of console generations. I’m saying, including the leap from 2D to 3D. It’s going to change the way we think about every bit of our experiences.”

Pitchford did say that the big leap forward will be difficult to see with the initial launch titles, citing that most of them are current-gen games being reimagined for next-gen consoles. So, it could take a few years before we see the big jump forward.

Also during his conversation with GameSpot, Pitchford said that he’s looking forward to bringing Borderlands 3 to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S while providing details on a new, upcoming mode for the game called Arms Race, which is being detailed as a completely new experience for fans of the franchise.

I cannot wait until [we can] share more about this, until people can experience it,” said Pitchford. “Because it’s fricking cool. It’s a totally new game. The way it feels to me, when I play it, it’s like, ‘Holy crap. This changes everything.’ And I think it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

He also went on to add that the new mode might not be for everyone, saying that those who are fans of a more story-driven experience might not end up enjoying it. However, if you’re someone who loves looting, shooting, and leveling up, then you’ll definitely be someone who enjoys Borderlands 3’s Arms Race mode when it launches.

Godfall, which is also being developed by Gearbox Software, will launch alongside the PlayStation 5 in November, which is being described as a looter-slasher.
